Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)

Emotional Freedom Technique, more commonly referred to as EFT, is a powerful treatment system for the mind and body, specifically designed to remove negative emotions by correcting the flow of energy through the Meridians. It was developed by Gary Craig in the 1990s and is derived from Thought Field Therapy. It also has its origins from the Principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and comes under the general heading of energy psychology, where the mind and body is seen as an energy system.

Energy travels through the body in meridians and the points which are tapped in EFT are electromagnetically sensitive, meridian end points, and which coincide with acupuncture/acupressure. In simplest terms, EFT is an emotional version of acupuncture – except that it doesn’t involve the use of needles and instead uses tapping with fingertips.

The system is based on an important discovery that a thought or memory causes a disruption in the electromagnetic energy system of the body, which in turn is interpreted as a negative emotion. EFT corrects the energy imbalance experienced and thereby simply removes the ’emotional charge’ from a memory, a thought or a concept.

When the points are stimulated, there is a cascade of neurological and physiological effects – `the stimulation of acupressure points produces opioids, serotonin and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and regulates cortisol. These neuro-chemical changes reduce pain, slow the heart rate, decrease anxiety, shut off the fight/flight response, regulate the autonomic nervous system and create a sense of calm. This relaxation response reciprocally inhibits anxiety and creates a rapid desensitization to traumatic stimuli.’

In other words, it unblocks energy.  It is said that ‘our unresolved negative emotions are major contributors to most physical pains and diseases’.  When properly done, EFT appears to balance disturbances in the meridian system and thus often reduces the conventional therapy procedures from months or years down to minutes or hours.

Indeed, the results are so remarkable that many practitioners, including reputable doctors and therapists, are now using and recommending EFT for both emotional and physical healing. It is being used for everything from the common cold to cancer, for fear, trauma, depression, grief and even schizophrenia.

self help

The truly wonderful about EFT is that it is a totally safe, process is easy to memorize, it is portable and can be practiced anywhere. It can be a wonderful self-help technique, though for more complex issues, it is recommended to work with a qualified and registered practitioner. You can work in a content-free manner which means that therapist does not need to know any private information or personal secrets. It is also an amazing self-help tool for anyone to learn.

Other therapists do advertise as using EFT in their practice but many are not members of a professional body and they may not have had any formal training. This could mean that they are not suitably trained to deal with any potential abreaction that may occur and so be sure to check out a therapist’s credentials before commencing work with them.

I am an accredited and certified Level 3 Practitioner and have also trained in EFT Light Techniques,  which allows for spiritual healing to be integrated if that is what the client is open to.
