What Is Clinical Hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis is a state of mentally focused concentration whilst the body is in a state of deep mental and physical relaxation. It provides us with a bridge to get from the conscious mind to the subconscious mind, where we can get to the root of a problem and/or bring about other changes. Hypnosis allows for total concentration on an idea or concept, promoting fast and positive transformation. It can also be used to improve or enhance almost all areas of life and human activity.

Hypnotherapy is a skill which uses the tool of Hypnosis for the conduct of many and various forms of Psychotherapy, such as to enhance motivation or change, to enhance personal or spiritual growth and/or to release clients of problems and the cause of problems. Hypnotherapy can help us to make sense of something that seemed beyond our control and understanding and helps reduce our life’s fears and placing limitations on ourselves. It is like a laser that helps you to pinpoint exactly what the problem is, making the therapy much more effective both in terms of time and cost. Without it, it rather like trying to find a needle in a haystack!

Your conscious mind is wonderful at designing the life you want, but if you want to change a habit, thought, belief or behavior, you must work with the subconscious mind and hypnosis is used to access this.

Our brain works on the following brainwave frequencies:

Beta (conscious mind) – the brain is active, and you are aware.

Alpha (subconscious mind) – the brain slows down and relaxes; the conscious mind starts to sleep. You are more suggestible.

Theta – drifting on the edge of sleep, daydreaming and possibly having outer body experiences. Also, the state used for pain relief. You are highly suggestible.

Delta –deep sleep, with periods of dreaming in an unconscious state. The body refreshes itself in this state and the subconscious mind conducts the ‘filing’ of our waking experiences.

During Hypnosis, we usually work with the Alpha/ Theta states.

BENEFITS OF HYPNOTHERAPY

Modalities, such as counselling, are talk-based using conscious processes of thought, and the conscious mind can often interfere and hinder the success of the therapy and make the whole process much slower.

Hypnotherapy enables us to work more deeply in the psyche, with the subconscious mind, where the root of the presenting issue exists, and by doing this helps to produce more powerful lasting, profound change in a much quicker time frame.

Please be aware though that there are very different levels of hypnotherapy training offered. Some are weekend courses, as opposed to in-depth diplomas, like I have trained in, which enable to me deal with anything that may arise from the therapy process. I hold an International Advanced Diploma in Clinical Hypnotherapy, Psychotherapy and Counselling (Adv. Dip Hyp)

What is hypnosis like?

Hypnosis is a very natural state of mind and body, and we enter hypnotic states every day without even realizing we are doing so, like when driving or going to and waking from sleep. You may not feel like you are hypnotized as you are able to comment and talk from the conscious mind. You are not asleep or unconscious. Some people go into a deep trance, others don’t. Everyone relaxes and experiences it in their own way.

During hypnosis;

  • You are totally aware of yourself and your surroundings at all times.
  • You are not in anybody’s power, and nobody can take control of you.
  • You cannot at any time be made to do anything you do not want to do.
  • You can come out of the hypnotic state anytime you wish.
  • You do not get stuck in a trance state.
  • You do not ‘blurt out’ your dark secrets unless you want to!
  • You do not say or do funny things unless you want to!
  • You do not become possessed.
  • You do not leave your body.
  • There will be no loss of memory or ability to think for yourself.
  • Your personality will not be affected.
